Dean Parker has taken out the 2026 ‘A Grand from The Grand’ jockeys’ competition following a consistent two days in the saddle at the Great New Zealand Jumps Carnival at Te Aroha.

Parker finished on 18 points, two clear of Kylan Wiles on 16, with Michael Roustoby third on 14 points. The competition rewarded jockeys for placings across the Carnival’s highweight, jumps and feature races, with Parker collecting the $1,000 first prize sponsored by The Grand Tavern. Wiles earned $300 for second and Roustoby $200 for third, with the minor prizes supported by New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing. 

Parker’s campaign was highlighted by a perfect weekend aboard Taika, winning Friday’s Dunstan Maiden Steeplechase before combining again to take Sunday’s AJRA 0-1 Win Steeplechase. He added further points with a second aboard Teleost and victory on Good Spot in the final race of the Carnival to secure the title. 

Wiles was propelled into contention by his feature victory aboard Quid in the J Swap Contractors Great New Zealand Hurdles, while Roustoby enjoyed a strong opening day with victories aboard Endean Ace and Queen Sansa, before adding a third aboard Smug in Sunday’s Ben & Ryan Foote Racing Great New Zealand Steeplechase. 

The competition returned for its second year in 2026, adding another layer of interest across the two-day Carnival while recognising the skill and consistency of the jockeys competing at Te Aroha.
